What "30 ATM" Actually Means — And Why It's Not 30 Metres

Two watches in our own catalog carry the number 30 in their water-resistance rating. One survives 300 metres. The other should not go in a swimming pool. Here is why that happens, and how to read a spec sheet so it never costs you a watch.

The 30 that means two different things

Here are two watches we sell. Look at how their water resistance is written.

Both say 30. One is a professional dive watch with a screw-down case back and a unidirectional bezel, rated to a depth where recreational scuba diving stops being recreational. The other is a beautifully made pilot's watch that should never be worn in a swimming pool.

The difference is the unit. ATM means atmospheres of pressure. Metres means metres. One atmosphere is roughly ten metres of water. So 30 ATM is 300 metres, and 30 metres is 3 ATM — a tenfold difference hiding behind identical digits.

The short version: if a rating says 30 and the unit is ATM, it is a serious water watch. If it says 30 and the unit is metres, keep it away from water beyond a hand wash. If the unit is missing entirely, assume the smaller number until you can confirm otherwise.

ATM to metres: the actual conversion

The conversion is straightforward once you have seen it. Multiply atmospheres by ten to get metres.

Notice the collision. Three ATM and thirty metres are the same watch. Thirty ATM and three hundred metres are the same watch. The number 30 appears in both, describing depths that differ by a factor of ten. That single coincidence causes more confusion than every other spec on a watch combined.

What each rating really allows

Ratings are not depth permissions. They are pressure tests. Here is the practical translation.

The one that surprises people is 30 metres. It sounds like a lot. Thirty metres underwater is deeper than most people will ever swim. But a 30-metre rating does not mean you can take the watch thirty metres down, and this is the single most misunderstood number in watch retail.

Why the number on the case back is a lie of omission

Water-resistance ratings come from a static pressure test. The watch sits in a chamber, pressure equivalent to a given depth is applied, and the watch either leaks or it does not. Nothing moves.

Real water does not behave that way. Swinging your arm through a swimming stroke can briefly generate pressure well beyond the static equivalent of the depth you are at. Diving into a pool produces an impact spike. A jet in a hot tub is a sustained pressurised stream aimed directly at your case back.

This is why the practical guidance sits well below the printed number. A 30-metre watch is tested at 30 metres of static pressure and is rated, in practice, for splashes. A 50-metre watch handles a shower and a gentle swim. The gap between the number and the advice is not manufacturers being cautious for fun — it is the difference between still water and moving water.

Heat matters too, which is why showers are treated more carefully than their depth would suggest. Gaskets expand and contract with temperature, and hot water combined with soap is harder on a seal than cold water at the same pressure.

We audited our own listings — and found an error

While researching this guide, we checked how water resistance is written across our own catalog. We found a real problem in our Guess listings.

The supplier data for those watches carries a field written as ATM - 30. In that feed, the 30 means metres. But read cold, without the unit convention, it looks like it says 30 ATM. Our product copy read it the wrong way and described 30-metre dress watches as though they were rated to 300 metres. The same thing happened with 50-metre watches.

The watch that led us to it is the Guess Gala, a 30mm rose-gold dress piece with a crystal-set bezel. It is a lovely thing. It is rated to 30 metres — splashes and hand washing. It is not a swimming watch, and our listing implied it was.

So we went through every Guess watch we list — 201 of them — and corrected the 129 listings that carried the error. Each one now states the rating in metres with the ATM equivalent beside it, and describes what that rating actually allows.

If you bought a Guess watch from us and read that it was rated to 30 ATM or 50 ATM, the correct figure is 30 or 50 metres. Treat a 30-metre watch as splash-resistant only, and a 50-metre watch as fine for showering and light swimming but nothing more. We would rather tell you plainly than quietly edit a page.

We are publishing that because the mistake is instructive. It was not carelessness about the watch — it was a spec field whose unit convention was ambiguous, read by someone who did not know the convention. That is exactly the trap this guide exists to explain, and we walked straight into it.

Price tells you nothing about water resistance

A reasonable assumption is that more expensive watches are more water resistant. Our own catalog says otherwise. Here are four watches we sell, ordered by price.

The Bulova costs nearly twice the Michael Kors and handles less water. That is not a flaw in the Bulova. It is a mechanical automatic pilot's watch with a sapphire crystal and a genuine historical design, and water resistance was never its job. The Michael Kors is a quartz fashion chronograph that happens to have a better-sealed case.

Water resistance is a design decision, not a quality tier. A watch built around a screw-down crown and a gasketed case back will always beat a watch built around a slim profile and a push-pull crown, regardless of what either costs.

How to read any watch listing in 30 seconds

Four checks, in order.

1. Find the unit

ATM, BAR, metres, or feet. If the listing gives a bare number with no unit, that is a red flag, not a detail to skip. ATM and BAR are effectively interchangeable for this purpose — both mean roughly ten metres each.

2. Sanity-check against the watch itself

A slim dress watch on a leather strap is not rated to 300 metres, whatever the listing says. A watch with a rotating timing bezel, a thick case and a screw-down crown probably is rated for real water. If the number and the watch disagree, trust the watch.

3. Look at the crown

A screw-down crown — one you have to unscrew before setting the time — is the single strongest indicator of serious water resistance. Push-pull crowns are common on watches rated 50 metres and below.

4. Convert down, not up

When you are unsure, assume the lower interpretation. Treating a 300-metre watch as a 30-metre watch costs you nothing. The reverse costs you the watch.

What quietly destroys water resistance

A rating describes the watch when it left the factory. It is not permanent.

Gaskets age. The rubber seals at the crown, case back and crystal harden and shrink over years. A ten-year-old 100-metre watch that has never been serviced is not a 100-metre watch anymore.

An unscrewed crown defeats everything. If you unscrew the crown to set the time and forget to screw it back down, the watch has an open channel straight into the movement. This is the most common cause of water damage in watches that were perfectly capable of handling the water.

Chronograph pushers are not sealed when pressed. On most chronographs below dive-watch specification, operating the pushers underwater breaks the seal. Time your laps before you get in.

Heat is worse than depth. Saunas, hot tubs and hot showers expand the case and the gaskets at different rates. Many watches that survive a cold swim fail in a hot tub at a fraction of the pressure.

Impact matters. A knock that seems harmless can distort a case back seat or unseat a gasket without leaving a visible mark.

If you swim in a watch regularly, have the seals pressure-tested every couple of years. It is inexpensive and it is the only way to know the rating still holds.

The five things worth remembering

  1. 1 ATM is roughly 10 metres. 30 ATM is 300 metres; 30 metres is 3 ATM.
  2. 30 metres means splashes only — not showering, not swimming.
  3. Ratings come from static tests; moving water generates more pressure than the number suggests.
  4. Price does not predict water resistance. A $516 pilot watch can be less water resistant than a $264 chronograph.
  5. Water resistance degrades with age. Get seals tested if you swim in your watch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shower with a 30-metre water resistant watch?

No. A 30-metre rating covers rain, splashes and hand washing. Showering combines hot water, soap and direct pressure, all of which are harder on gaskets than still water at the same depth. Take it off.

Is 30 ATM the same as 30 metres?

No, and this is the most expensive confusion in watch buying. 30 ATM is 300 metres — a professional dive rating. 30 metres is 3 ATM — splash resistance. The two differ by a factor of ten and are frequently written in ways that make them easy to mistake for each other.

Can I swim in a 50-metre watch?

Brief surface swimming is generally acceptable at 50 metres, and showering is usually fine. Diving, water sports and hot tubs are not. If the watch has a push-pull crown rather than a screw-down one, be more conservative still.

What water resistance do I need to actually scuba dive?

200 metres or more, and ideally a watch built to the ISO 6425 dive standard, which requires a unidirectional bezel, luminous markings visible in darkness, and individual testing rather than batch testing. A 100-metre watch handles swimming and snorkelling but is not a diving instrument.

Why does my watch say 100 metres but the manual says not to dive with it?

Because the rating comes from a static pressure test with the watch held motionless. Real swimming and diving generate dynamic pressure well above the static equivalent of your depth, so manufacturers publish practical guidance below the tested figure. The number and the advice are measuring different things.

Does water resistance wear off over time?

Yes. The gaskets sealing the crown, case back and crystal harden and shrink over years, and the rating degrades with them. An unserviced watch a decade old should not be trusted at its original rating. Pressure testing every two years is sensible if you swim in it.

What does BAR mean on a watch, and how does it compare to ATM?

BAR is a unit of pressure almost identical to ATM for this purpose — 1 BAR is very close to 1 atmosphere, and both convert to roughly 10 metres. A watch marked 10 BAR and one marked 10 ATM are rated the same.

Is a watch with no water resistance rating safe in the rain?

Assume not. If a manufacturer has not published a rating, the watch has not been tested or the result was not worth printing. Treat unrated watches as fully non-water-resistant and keep them dry.

My chronograph is rated 100 metres. Can I use the pushers while swimming?

Not unless the manual specifically says the pushers are sealed under pressure. On most chronographs the pushers are a weak point when operated underwater, even when the watch itself is well sealed. Start and stop the timer before you get in.
